I had installed for sometime the MSGboy extension on google chrome cause i thought it was a cool news aggregator. Not long after, I started seeing unwanted buzzdock ads even though I have both adblock plus and adblock installed.
People online where saying something about uninstalling a Yontoo software, only I didn't have it. Guess what. Uninstalling MSgboy solved my problem.
RIP Msgboy RIP in the pile of spam and malware.
Adios
Update: From the comment by Julien it seems that Msgboy do not intentionally show ads. Hoewever the ads on google chrome searches disappeared when I uninstalled Msgboy. Some sort of exploit maybe? I do not know. And unfortunately I do not have the technical knowledge to dig into Msgboy source code.
Update2: So I re-installed msgboy and strangely the ads did not return. So I probably owe an apology to Julien, still the question remains how did buzzdock ads landed on my pc and disappeared after uninstalling msgboy app, but did not appear after re-installing it?

Ouch. I'm the creator of Msgboy and we are not showing any ads anywhere :/ Not sure why you got them.
ReplyDeleteIt would have helped if you emailed us about it, so we could have tried to debug things out.
Also, Msgboy is ocmpletely open source and you can look at its source code if you think we show ads.
Hi Julien
ReplyDeleteI honestly didn't think of contacting you nor i expected such a fast response on this blogpost. However the experience is as described: At first using MSgboy was unproblematic but then about 2 weeks ago i started getting ads on my google searches from buzzdock. If you say it is not part of the software I believe you. However by just uninstalling Msgboy eliminated those ads as well. I do not know how or why that happened.
