an or a

I have noticed lately that many use the article "an" with the LED when writing.

My problem is that while reading such a phrase I do not read the LED as el-ee-di but I rather read is as one word (sounds a bit like lead) and therefore always always have to pause and think of the odd sound that this expression makes. If one reads LED as one word rather than as separate letters then the "an led" sounds like trouble.
